What the first judges said in 2021

King of the Castle has a buzzy vibe and a legend status to live up to. Smiling, well-uniformed staff (and a lot of them). Pumping soundtrack fitting the urban/industrial aesthetic like a chamois glove.  People were obviously very settled and content, and the Baristi were pumping out brews like metronomes. The King obviously isn’t one of Geelong’s best kept secrets; judging by the constant parade of brunchers through the doors of 24 Pakington St. serving a menu of brekky favourites and vegan options, not forgetting kick-arse coffee, this temple of urban cool pulsates with a rhythm that is pure Pako. Its classy chic, industrial vibe will get your feet tapping to the thumping beat of a carefully curated playlist. Kick off your weekend with jalapeno laced brekky tacos, or fuel up with a Kings Breakfast with the lot, and wash it with a cup of the best coffee you’ll find south of Seattle. Simply the best Magic Coffee I’ve had in a Very. Long. Time. Whoever is driving the espresso machine has the “magic” touch. Then have another because you deserve it.

Previous Awards

Prior to 2018  King of the Castle won and array of Golden Plate Awards including  the Golden Plate Hall of Fame. It set an industry standard for regional cafes. It previously focused on coffee and a selection of sandwiches, wraps and slices and local producers well represented.  Now under new and enthusiastic management of Nick and Gemma Watts their first step was to install a new full commercial kitchen.
