Doug Kerr, the chef at Peasant Restaurant in Lydiard Street North Ballarat, has a philosophy regarding his food that explains the title of the restaurant. It’s about enjoying food that is cooked slowly so that the flavours and quality of the produce shine through. It’s about sharing an experience, enjoying each course with your family and friends as you wind your way through the menu. Each menu is crafted from different European cuisines, and the menu is presented on the night so that the experience is always new and exciting. It is a journey, and one that is highly recommended. Our coffee was very nice – a good strong mellow flavour. The latte art was attractive and the creaminess of the latte was really good. We particularly liked the cups and saucers – Beautiful presentation.
The idea of projecting the menu onto the wall was clever. It added a lot of interest and I liked the idea of it being designed for each week. The dishes all matched each other well, and the flavours were all harmonious. We particularly liked the pork roulade to start, and the beef carpaccio was delicious. It was also beautifully presented. The wine list had a good selection of Australian and imported wines, priced very reasonably. The cocktails were amazing tempting one to stay and enjoy your time at Peasant even more. Peasant offers a five-course degustation menu with a menu that changes weekly. You’ll be impressed with the flavours of the beautiful slow cooked dishes, and satisfied with the size of each dish. This is not a degustation where you go home feeling like you could fit more in, the food is generous in quantity as well as beautifully presented. So the value for money at Peasant is excellent.
