The Mallow Hotel

Judges’ comments 2026:

The Mallow delivers a warm, polished and deeply enjoyable experience, with a vintage charm that feels perfectly suited to its history as Ballarat’s oldest publican licence. The cosy rooms, fireplace, thoughtful lighting and well-matched decor all work together to create a welcoming and character-filled atmosphere.

Service was a major highlight, with the front of house team showing professionalism, warmth and excellent timing from beginning to end. Aidan in particular was a standout, offering thoughtful food and wine suggestions that felt genuine, well informed and perfectly suited to the meal. The attention to detail around pacing helped create a seamless dining experience.

The mains were the stars of the food offering, with the stuffed chicken legs cooked beautifully and the lamb shoulder proving to be a memorable dish, especially when paired with the SubRosa Shiraz from the Grampians. The beverage list may be compact, but it is well chosen, seasonal and full of quality, with a strong local focus.

Value for money is another clear strength. The combination of faultless service, fair food pricing, well-priced drinks and generous midweek offers such as the $20 Monday Parma night makes The Mallow a venue that feels both considered and accessible. A fantastic example of a historic pub delivering with warmth, quality and confidence.
