what the judges said in 2017
The food and service coupled with a pleasant setting by the Barwon River and contemporary ambience and interior furnishings elevate The Grovedale Hotel beyond expectations. The menu offers plenty of variety for meat eaters and a variety of vegetarian options. Stand-outs included the bruschetta presented with flair, delicious toppings and big enough for sharing. The oysters served were fresh and tasty, and the eye fillet nicely charred on the outside, cooked to perfection, and tender and flavoursome. The jus was delicious and the accompanying vegetables were prepared and served with care. The pork ribs from the daily specials were beautifully sticky, tender and packed with flavour, and a finger bowl was thoughtfully provided. Desserts included a range of cakes from Cakesmith including the chai crème brulee which was an interesting take on a traditional dish. The coconut sorbet created a nice counterpoint to the creaminess of the brulee. The range of wines was bolstered by a good beer list and good coffee. The Hotel knows its patrons well and serves substantial serving sizes and popular dishes with wide appeal presented with an extra element of excitement. There Grovedale is a good pub that scores well for value for money including wines by the glass, desserts and coffee.
Recently refurbished, stylish interior and attractive riverside setting, alfresco areas, family friendly, good range of value for money foods and drinks, friendly customer service.
