FIRST Judges reports in 2022

Fresh, vibrant contemporary space feature at Higher Society in Sturt Street Ballarat with a soothing, unhurried feel. Excellent well-spaced tables offering a variety of seating options, with quality cutlery and glassware. Acoustics seemed to be well above par; plenty of conversations happening around the floor but no need for anybody to raise their voice. The green wall hinted at a focus on health and sustainability and this feeling was confirmed after scanning the menu. All-in-all a pretty, clean and comfortable space.

You’ll cry Eureka! too, when you walk through the doors – the slick capitol of caffeine bang in the middle of Ballarat’s booming Sturt Street coffee strip. A café with contemporary cred, Higher Society pumps out a delicious selection of healthy on-trend brekkie and brunch dishes for all dietary needs and washes them down with brews of 5 Senses ‘Dark Horse’ blend expertly extracted from a coffee machine as beautiful as a Maserati. Settle in for New Age Porridge, smash down some Shakshuka and top it all off with Citrus Meringue French Toast washed down by a cold pressed juice or a French kiss kombucha. Top off your Higher Society brunch with a barista board – a tasting flight of some of the best coffee to ever pass your lips.  The menu is breakfast/brunch focused and offers most dietary options across a variety of on-trend dishes. The Mr Yum menu features a small list of beers and pre-mix cocktails. Presentation throughout carries eye-appeal and the portions of serves are good.  Excellent! A tight well-focused menu of healthy leaning dishes. Delicious and well presented. The pricing and value for money at Higher Society that fits the market and exceeds expectations.

Judges’ reports for 2021

Nestled in a small line of shops in Ballarat’s main strip of Sturt Street is the very cool “Higher Society” cafe. The menu is creative and the ingredients are fresh, bursting with flavour and beautifully presented. Customer service is friendly and efficient.  In Ballarat this is the place to be seen where you will feel part of a “higher society”. It’s also a seriously contemporary eatery set up with an eye for detail (clean lines, a plant wall, large mirrors, rest rooms that would suit a 5 star hotel, information about the coffees served, etc). The food and coffee menu offers many good choices. There a small but good list of alcoholic drinks but no wines on the day we visited.

Special strengths

Stylish decor. A friendly welcome and great customer service.  Obvious attention to detail. Great Eggs Benedict. Perfectly cooked eggs. Tender and flavoursome pork.  Huge Rosti with generous portion of Avocado. Great vegetarian options. Excellent range of expertly made specialty coffees. Sensational value for money. Recommended.
