The Vue Grand Hotel in Queenscliff is home to perhaps the last grand 19th century dining room in Victoria, and some remarkably gifted kitchen and front of house people. There’s so much that’s good about this iconic venue: the space, a sense of occasion, the excellent customer service, and an easy-going formality. The food is contemporary, the result of highly professional skills, and always a great blend of flavours. The drinks list is a ripper – a huge range of wines, spirits, beers, and a strong focus on local and regional beverages. It’s a well designed menu that lists local ingredients without making a great fuss about them – Hopkins beef, local octopus, local bay snapper. There’s a moderate amount of seafood and a single vegetarian dish in each course. We had the scallops and the duck breast as entrees, followed by the confit chicken and the ocean trout, with ginger cake for dessert.  The beef was very popular. What’s striking about the food at the Vue Grand is how well the combinations of flavours work. And there’s a wonderful range of desserts. Presentation throughout was impressive. A nice touch to start: the amuse-gueule, as a play on onion soup. Prices are remarkably fair for food and drinks, and the service is friendly and highly professional. Two course for $59 is exceptional value considering the quality and service. So are the three courses, and the tasting menu. And drinks prices are also great value, so a dining experience at the Vue Grand is surprisingly affordable!
