What the judges said in 2019

The Lord Nelson Hotel is a beautifully restored pub in Geelong, and the meals, drinks, and customer service have noticeably improved in 2019. The result is a terrific pub that delivers good value for money.  On a Tuesday evening in the middle of winter it was busy in both the Bar and dining room.  Customer service was friendly, helpful and efficient. The Nelson promotes itself as a Steak House and the Korean Lamb Ribs were beautifully cooked and the Parma was excellent with free-range chicken with the right amount of Napoli, Ham and cheese. The Rare 400gm Porterhouse Steak was delicious and grilled to perfection, and the Housemade Duck Spring Rolls were packed with meat and a touch of Ginger. The desserts were equally delicious including White Chocolate Pana-Cotta – rich as expected but with berries or berry coulis large enough to be shared.  Congratulations to the Nelson for its drinks list – the best I have seen in a hotel in 2019, with a large range of local wines, beers and ciders by the bottle or glass, a fine local Gamay by Nick Farr, and Nebbiolo from Lethbridge, plus many good local ales. Not to forget the well made Espresso with a great crema, balance and aftertaste. The Lord Nelson offers seriously good food in generous portions and an excellent drinks menu – all at good prices. Recommended.
