what the judges said (2016-2017)
The Telegraph Hotel in Pakington Street Geelong West is a handsome art deco building that has been sympathetically extended and modernized. The separation between the front bar and the rear dining room works really well and the ambience is warm, stylish and welcoming. Everything about the Telegraph is stylish including the spotless and well appointed toilets. The menu at the Telegraph traverses Eastern and Western cuisines with confidence and an underlying appreciation of great flavours. Everything we ate was jumping fresh, honest and full of flavour. Sticky chicken wings with chilli, fried shallots and coriander sat comfortably alongside a golden scallop and parmesan gratin. In the front bar choose from the constantly changing craft beer menu or in the dining room sit comfortably with the locals while enjoying expertly prepared chicken scallopini with bacon, smashed potatoes and peppercorn mustard cream. The Express lunch offers fantastic value for money and judging by the number of diners the combination of great food and value is appreciated. The Telegraph offered a comprehensive wine list covering all the important bases and more. The reserve selection is a great idea. There’s a great craft beer selection and the constantly changing tap menu keeps your adventurous beer lovers interested and happy. We were impressed by the friendly customer service and the prices for both foods and beverages. The Telegraph stands out as one of the Great Hotels in Victoria, and Geelong and the locals are fortunate to have it.
