2016 Judges’ Comments
We were not expecting to find a restaurant of such high calibre in the small town of Maldon in Central Victoria (population 1,350) but we did! The Spotted Cow sits within an old shop exterior with chairs and tables on the footpath and little to indicate the culinary treasures waiting for you inside. The grilled lamb and rainbow salad, served warm, was a lovely entrée. The in-house made charcuterie plate (on the menu for two persons but readily served for one at a reduced price) was our personal jackpot for the visit. The homemade pappardelle pasta, cut unevenly added to the rustic feel of the dish, shone with the richness of the sweet and juicy beef cheek -gelatinous and dark – true winter comfort food – was heavenly. The eye fillet was cooked to perfection and served with beans and handsome thrice cooked chips – their fluffy centres a delight. The creme brulee and homemade blackberry gelato were excellent – happily transporting me back to my childhood. The sublime mango gelato was lovely, and the chocolate – rich, thick (like a mousse but served cold). The beef, farmed within cooee of the restaurant – was a wonderful treat. The Spotted Cow reflects a great love for its region and pride in the meals, drinks and service it delivers – no wonder most of the tables were filled by happy locals. The exceptional menu of local wines with plenty available by the glass was impressive for such a small eatery. Customer service was efficient, friendly and entertaining. The Spotted Cow offers a chance to enjoy delicious foods, wines, cheerful service and great value for money in a charming little building. Well worth staying over in Maldon to experience this exceptional country eatery.
