The Rifle Brigade Hotel is a good traditional pub in View Street Bendigo in a prime position near shops across the road from the Bendigo Art Gallery and the football ground. It’s decorated nicely to create a warm and welcoming environment with friendly staff on hand to help you make your choices. There are full sized rooms and nooks and crannies to accommodate small and large groups, and an open fire in the cooler months. The two entrees sampled were visually pleasing and good tasting, creating a sense that this hotel knew what it was doing. The Asian scallop spoons entrée was a lightly handled dish with delightfully fresh scallops and a gentle flavours. The croquettes were cooked beautifully indicating fresh oil and a gentle touch. The aioli was flavoured moderately and didn’t overpower the subtleties in the croquettes. The chicken and leek filo, chosen from the specials board, was cooked beautifully; the outer layers crisp and not overdone, the under layers soft but cooked through. The deconstructed vacherin was a lovely surprise, little meringues, with good ice cream and cream and fresh berries. It is good to see the origins of the wines on the drinks list which was divided into four categories and easy to navigate and plenty of the wines were available by the glass, plus a range of beers including local drops. The customer service was good. We were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to a table. Menus, water and smiles all came quickly. When a dish I ordered had a dressing I was allergic to, the situation was handled quickly and politely without making me feel uncomfortable, and the Hotel is not only willing to split bills but actively encourages it! The prices were reasonable, the portion sizes generous, and we enjoyed our visit to the Rifle Brigade Hotel.
