Heartland of Geelong’s Café Culture

When visiting Geelong skip the ring-road and head straight to King of the Castle in Pakington Street. The atmosphere makes this an ideal place to meet and relax with partners or mates, and its a favourite with locals. The coffee is delicious, the menu offers tasty options, it’s got loads of natural light, timber surfaces and concrete floors. But it’s the atmosphere and staff that make a visit to King of the Castle brilliant. The foods and coffees served are just right, the value for money excellent, and the lively team are fun, helpful and engaging. King of the Castle has style that could easily be described as “cool”, but with fun staff and contented customers, this place feels very natural.

Judges’ Comments

King of the Castle in Pakington Street Geelong West is a Highly Awarded, vibrant and innovative cafe that we have watched reach higher and higher standards since it was opened. It thrives because of its talented and enthusiastic team and strong leadership from the top. The speciality coffee is delicious and the food menu offers great options and the cafe is a community hub that makes heroes of local suppliers. Not only through dishes served but through the sale of retail products. We enjoyed the terrific autumn menu with diverse options for all tastes and dietary requirements that makes local suppliers heroes of the menu. The chilled black rice pudding was perfectly presented with fresh fruit, flowers and herbs, and the coconut yogurt added the perfect level of sweetness and superior to dairy yoghurt, while the pesto chilli beans were spicy and the pesto added a richness – an interesting combination with good flavours. The local bread was freshly toasted, the bacon delicious smoky and cooked perfectly with crispy fat and moist flesh and the rice pudding floral and flavoursome. The staff here make you feel welcome and take pride in their work. Our waiter gave good advice, a touch of friendly banter, and was attentive to our needs throughout, producing an incredibly impressive hospitality experience. In terms of value for money the bill for two came well under $50 for mains, coffees and deserts – representing very good value. Serving sizes were generous, the coffee was speciality, and the charge for black coffee was less than with milk. The social media presence is impressive and takes this vibrant cafe online – highlighting new offerings and products.  King of the Castle is setting an ever higher benchmark in contemporary cafes, and we look forward to seeing just how far they can take this exciting journey.
