Traditional Pub Dining in Maldon
The Kangaroo Hotel in Maldon (20 minutes from Castlemaine) provides a trip back in time to a traditional country pub where atmosphere and conviviality are supreme. This is not a “Fine Dining” experience so much as “Fun Dining”, with open fires in the winter, tables and chairs on the veranda and garden eating in the rear. Expect lots of laughter and live music on weekends. You will remember the Kangaroo and the locals long after you’ve forgotten other eateries. And there are regular events to attract you to this town such as the Easter Parade, classic car and motorcycle meetings, a regular street market, the eat-under-the-stars Maldon Twilight Dinner (January) and “the Tarrangower Hill Climb” that has been running every year since the 1920’s!
What the first judge said in 2019
The Kangaroo Hotel in Maldon has old world charm in a historically significant building (reputed to be the only Kangaroo Hotel in Australia). The pub sits within the central Highland Goldfields. An open brazier greeted us warmly at the front door where locals relaxed with cheer and good will. Patrons can choose between a dining room, a meal in the Bar, or eat on the front veranda or in the rear garden. The menu and specials board listed local meats and local vegetables. The pork belly was well cooked and the pumpkin soup was good. The puree with the duck was full of flavour and the Pannacotta was delightful. The drinks list was proudly local including a good number of local beers. So if you’re after an authentic country pub with friendly atmosphere, good drinks and comfort foods, head to the Kangaroo Hotel in Maldon.
