First Judges’ Comments 2017
One of Victoria’s great family-friendly pubs.
There is a welcome element of theatre about the family-friendly Elephant and Castle Hotel in Geelong. Not surprising considering that Darren Lyons (otherwise known as Mr Paparazzi) is the co-owner. The layout of the dining rooms was great, the atmosphere electric and the menus designed like tabloid newspapers. Memorable photos taken by Darren were on display as well as numerous beautiful paintings. Soft rock music played in the background without disturbing patrons. Customer service was friendly and efficient from the moment of arrival until departure. The Elephant and Castle offers a good range of excellent meals. Stand outs included Korean style BBQ beef entrée with cos lettuce leaves filled with red cabbage, chives, and succulent tender beef, chicken rolled, stuffed and wrapped in prosciutto with crisp and vibrant green beans, steamed bok choy, roasted kipfler potatoes, fried shallots and a tasty broth, excellent lemon and thyme battered flathead tails with beer battered chips, and fresh mesculin salad with carrots, tomatoes lightly dressed with tartare sauce, and Vietnamese style churros with chilli chocolate – excellent tasting food and generous portions. There is also good bar meals for a bargain $12. A selection of good beers, wines and ciders are on offer and the wine list included local, interstate and International wines. The food, drinks, service and atmosphere at the Elephant and Castle represented excellent value for money, and there is good regular entertainment including performers and quiz nights. Highly recommended.
