Captains Creek Winery meanders past the original homestead of Captain Hepburn. Four generations of the May family have run the 80 hectare farm for more than 100 years. Its red volcanic soils have been cultivated for many uses including mixed cereals, hay, beef cattle and dairy cows. The transition to organic farming began in the 1980s, grapes were planted in 1994 and the following year Captains Creek became one of the firsts certified “organic” farms in Australia followed by cellar door operations in 2005. The winery and eatery is now a delightful venue in a glorious setting for functions, weddings, events and conferences.

This is so much more than just a place to eat lunch and taste wines. This is a great afternoon’s excursion. The food is as close to its origins as you can hope for – served simply and with respect. The wine is made right there and there is the chance to talk to the growers and makers, and are available by the glass. Captain’s Creek is easy on the eye with pleasant decor inside and views to the working farm. Expect a chook to wander past, a lamb or alpaca or two to walk into view, and kookaburras on fence posts. Plus there are balls for the kids to kick about and blankets if you want to sit outside on a cold day. Plus there are shelves filled with fresh produce to take home including pickled garlic flowers, local cheeses and smallgoods. (I’m expecting at least one double-yolker in my egg carton),
Convivial atmosphere with lovely rural views and open fire. Decor and comfort levels terrific. Simple food cooked really well. Good quality well priced house wines. Friendly and helpful service. Delicious coffee. Prices very reasonable for quality of food and wine served.
