2016 JUDGES’ COMMENTS
From the moment you walk into Koukla’s stunning building opposite the roundabout in the centre of Daylesford, you are welcomed by the glowing pizza oven on one side and the dancing flames of the open fire place on the other. Koukla has a warm, busy and friendly atmosphere that encourages you to relax and enjoy. The food could be described as “comfort” foods or “generous rustic”, the menu extensive, with generous portion sizes, and the customer service is friendly and efficient – as it needs to be because of the roaring trade. You should not visit Koukla without enjoying one of its famous pizzas. The potato pizza was something to write (or at least text) home about! A exceptional light base perfectly cooked with great toppings. The Peking duck pancake was enhanced by sweet plum flavors in the sauce. Next we had the impressive felafels served with flat bread. We finished with polenta cake which had lovely flavours and texture. The wine list covered all bases and there is a selection of local beers and some ciders, with plenty of wines available by the glass, and the coffees and teas are good. You can be assured of an enjoyable experience when you visit Koukla with its welcoming buzz, friendly atmosphere and customer service, and great eating and drinks at very reasonable prices.
