2016 Judges’ Comments

Walking into Cafe Cornucopia is like walking into the home of a slightly eccentric friend. It is styled in the fashion of a bowerbird’s haven which gave a sense of whimsy and homeliness. Great music added a layer of cosiness. And there’s a nice little courtyard outside too. The welcoming aromas of beautifully prepared and cooked food is a drawcard, enticing customers in and creating a pleasant sense of expectation. The food is wholesome and well prepared. This is not the place for trends and fad (the menu could have been written 20 years ago). People are drawn here for the thoroughness of preparation and skill in producing traditional dishes. The eggs were cooked to perfection, the hollandaise was exactly as it should be, and the salmon and spinach was spot-on. The refrigerated food cabinets were groaning with attractive fare – pizzas, pasta dishes, salads, soups, sauces and rolls – all prepared in-house.  Our order was taken and served without being written down as though we were part of the family. The stream of customers entering were obviously regulars and it was easy to see the appeal of being recognized, welcomed and appreciated. The menu prices were moderate. Cornucopia offers a welcome blast from the past.
