Visiting Bannockburn Station is to move back in time. It’s an evocative place with views from the well proportioned windows, an enormous timber counter, ornate dresser housing the coffee machine, lovely light fittings, a blazing fire, comfortable seating, and old photos of family members. The tables under the trees in the pretty garden would be a delight in warmer weather. Inside it’s a warm and magical place. The county style service by cheerful family members was friendly and helpful. The meals delicious, well-prepared, sourced locally and nicely presented. Standouts include the hearty Station Master’s Breakfast with spinach and tomatoes, the Mexican Fiesta with spicy beans, gluten-free and vegetarian options, and a array of delicious cakes. The Enga coffee from New Guinea (roasted in Ballarat) and Hot Chocolate were very good, and there’s a small but good range of local wines with most available by the glass. Everything was appealing here but the reason I will return again and again are the superb homemade cakes (don’t forget to take some home). The prices were low and the value amazing. The locals love this place. Bannockburn Station is well worth an excursion.
